Because I'm Rebelious...

First, before I forget, you guys totally pulled through for me yesterday on the egg issue! YAY! I knew you would.

Today I put on my painting clothes because then maybe I'll get around to painting...ya know, since I'm dressed for it and all.

It's the thought that counts.

I spent the morning registering my kids for school. 2nd grader, 1st grader, 2-day preschooler, and Julie who is technically a Senior. My August calendar is full of last minute physicals, eye doctor appointments and volleyball camp. If you need me, I'll be in my minivan. Good thing I love my minivan.

I'm also bucking the public school system for the first time (as a mom.) My first and second grader have a "milk snack" mid afternoon everyday. This is separate from the milk they drink at lunch. It will cost me $70 per kid for the year. I'm guessing, if the school could see the GALLONS AND GALLONS of milk we already go through in our home each week they would whole-heartedly agree with me that it's perfectly ok for me to waive paying the $140 for the mid afternoon milk snack and let my children drink water out of the cute water bottles I promised to buy them :)

I took that additional $140 and added it to their lunch account. I call that genius. Seriously though...why not just water in the afternoon? I think it makes more sense. I'm just saying...

How about you? Anybody else bucking the system on anything? (I'm obviously needing some validation here ;)

  1. Yeah - bucked the system by saying "No, my K will not be doing all day kindergarten. He will be doing half days, thank you very much." :) I don't think I could have pulled it off with any of my other children, (Just about every school in our area changed their kindergartens to all day last year), but K gets some special privileges. :)
Sounds like lots of excitement and busyness coming up! I'm looking forward to hearing all about your adventures with Julie!

  2. I just signed up my oldest for Kindergarten.
I'm guessing milk in the afternoon is geared more towards kids who probably don't get much nutrition at home? I'm sure the govt. pays for their afternoon milk! Water is better for them anyway. :)

  3. Butter starts first grade this year, we haven't gotten the info yet, but I'm very curious to see how much lunch is gonna cost. I'm not even sure if they have mid-afternoon snack, but I agree water is just fine. $70 seems like a LOT for a milk break. Really those baby cartons are nearly $2 a piece? I buy a gallon at Sam's club for $2.15-$2.50.

  4. Our soon-to-be 2nd grader has a huge list of supplies to buy. She will only be enrolled at this school for about a month before we move to NoDak. We aren't buying the supplies, because if we do, we won't get them back before we leave. So, instead of buying two lists, we are buying one. We've even thought of keeping her out of school until we get to NoDak, but she's very social, so the transition shouldn't really be an issue. Good for you on the milk decision!

  7. LOL! I think I'm the cheapest mom in my school district. I send my kids with water bottles everyday. I got nice stainless steel ones from Wal-Mart with a flip-top lid and I love them. My kid's school supply list alone puts me into debt each August.

  8. I don't even want to TALK about registration and lunch accounts. Seriously, it's ugly. I never really thought about the milk break thing before. Hmmmm, worth looking into skipping.

Go Sarah GO! Fight the power!

  9. Yep, I buck the system on a regular basis...kind of makes my husband **the principal** hot under the collar sometimes....but then there are times when my points are valid. I say "go for it" if you feel strongly about something...odds are, someone else feels that way, too, and they can't find their voice

  10. I know you already got lots of good advice but I saw a website in Shape magazine and thought about your egg dilemma. foodessentials.com lets you type in the food you need or don't need and will give you a list of treats. :) I haven't checked it out yet myself but intend to.

  11. Well, back in my teaching days (taught 2nd grade) we had a milk break too, right after afternoon recess. Most of my kids skipped getting milk because they had just come in from recess, all hot and sweaty, and just wanted water. I guess there are people out there who are all, "I'm soooo thirsty, give me some milk!" but most of my kids just wanted water.

  12. I don't sign my kids up for afternoon milk due to the whole $70x 5, plus the fact that we drink hormone free milk.....
Delphia struggles to finish her milk at home and so I didn't worry about her, but half way thru the year last year I got a note about paying the $70 for her milk, because they were giving it to her.... Hello!!! I didn't pay it for a reason. It's a strange peer pressure thing. Be prepared for your boys to suddenly begin to CRAVE milk at 2pm.

  13. Randomness for you, Cari paid the milk fee last year and her son is lactose intolerant. No one gave her the option to not pay it. It occurred to her when we were on our walk last night to skip paying it. My friends, Cari and Mardith are not paying it either. Sarah A.
