Progress & Giveaway

I really am on a tangent here.

It consumes my thoughts and conversations and has completely taken over my blog.

The House That Cleans Itself. Good book. Very good book. Gonna give-away a copy for anyone interested ;)

But first, I must force you to look at pictures of my progress. Because my friends...I have earned it. Organizing...it's hard work. HARD.

I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. The big fat mess that comes when you start going through stuff has pretty much disappeared...except for the attic storage room, which I don't want to talk about now...I'm pretending it doesn't exist for at least a few weeks. A girl can only take so much, ya know?!?

Pictures. I promised them.

I'm trying to use the principals that I talked about here.

Let's start in my mud room. I LOVE my mud room. Before the book, I had thought that it was fairly organized, yet I was ALWAYS frustrated with the boys coats and shoes left all over the place. After all, there were hooks! After taking a different view of the room, I realized that the hooks were actually too high for the boys to reach, so they didn't bother. Easy fix. We moved the top hooks higher and then placed 3 hooks at little boy level. Each boy has their own hook and boots go underneath their hook.

Next was the kitchen rug. It was a cute red one that looked adorable...only RIGHT after being vacuumed, otherwise it always looked dirty. Drove me nuts. I figured that I needed a rug that cleaned itself, so to speak. So I got this little number. It's woven bamboo and it hides all the junk. Looks clean even when it's not. Perfection.

The next project is painting the kitchen. I love the current shade of green, but I think I'll love a deep bright yellow even more!

Plus, the kitchen is the easiest room in my house to paint. It wins.

On to the bedrooms. Yikes. I have currently hauled 6 garbage bags of stuff to Goodwill. After cleaning out my closet to just the stuff I actually like, I also have two containers to go to consignment (which I've never done before)

Oh yeah, I labeled them. Little trick I like to use: Clear packing tape over the label, helps it stay better. Genius, I know. *cough*

Noah and Eli share a room. It normally looks like this:

Now, it looks like this:I know...miraculous. They actually gasped and jumped up and down when they saw it...mostly because they could actually get in the room now. In the far back corner you'll see the plastic drawers (with labels) that became their entertainment/Lego center. These had been in Jake's room, but he didn't really need them. Now they actually KNOW where stuff should go. I thought they did before...but really, how could they?!? I was expecting too much.

Simplified. That's all. These hooks are behind their bedroom door. It used to be stuffed full of sweatshirts that neither one knew whose was whose (thanks to hand-me-downs) I hung up the ones they didn't like as well and then gave them each 2 hooks.

My closet. Yesterday I mentioned my excessive amount of clothes mixed with my lack of closet space. Something had to give. The clothes I don't really love had to go. And it feels GREAT! I forgot to take before pictures, but here's the after:

The best thing is...I can actually see what I've got now, and it makes it a lot easier to put outfits together.

*PHEW*

Now, if you're like me and you want some PRACTICAL help with organizing...leave me a comment and let me know and you'll be registered in The House That Cleans Itself giveaway (and an email to reach you if you're not a blogger.)  It's only the book. I can't come help you. I've got my own mess.

Oh, and even if you don't want/need the book, you can still totally leave me a comment, just let me know :)

Happy organizing friends...A winner will be randomly generated tomorrow!

  1. How about I pay for your plane ticket and fill you up with LOTS of Starbucks, then will you come and help me organize? :) I would love to be entered into your drawing. Thank you, Sarah! GREAT pics!

  2. Well, this is the second blog that my post has disappeared into nowhere!

You have been working hard, girl! You are on a roll! I think you should personally deliver the book to whoever wins. Which would be me, of course!

  6. I need the help! Congratulations on your progress. I'm pretty sure there's an addictive brain chemical rush when I get organized. Totally makes it worth it. I enjoy the organizing, but I could use some guidance.

  7. You did some amazing organizing girl! Your hard work has not gone unnoticed or appreciated over here. I've been on a tangent over here too! without the help of the book...I'm doing my best. I need a labeler I think! Since you posted your bathrrom the other day those bright colors have stuck with me...I'm thinking my bathroom could use a make-over and our bedroom is in need of a new bedspread and paint...

  8. Here's a tip for ya. If you have not had time to really clean your house, run the vac quick over the carpet. I makes your house appear to be clean even if it isn't!

Also, when you do clean, start at one side of the room and work your way around (either clockwise or counter clockwise). This will keep you on task and if you get called to do something else, you know where you left off!

    Don't need the book but wanted to leave the tips :}

    Be careful with yellow paint - we thought we were getting a really pretty yellow and ended up with Big Bird Yellow - you know - the turn off the lights and it is still bright even though it is midnight outside bright?! Yeah - not the best in a bedroom :}

    Hugs!

  9. Well, if I'd known you were going to give away one, I wouldn't have gone and bought one! Mine's on the way from Amazon as we speak!! :P

I just want to tell you that I was so very relieved when I saw your boys' room in the before picture. Because that's how my girls' room looks, and honestly, I am so embarrassed by it that I need to close their door whenever anyone is visiting AND I live in mortal dread of my mother or mother-in-law seeing it! So thank you for instilling hope in me. I can't wait for my book!!

  10. WOW! I'm super impressed!

I'm so jealous of your label maker. I had one, but it doesn't work anymore.

Put me in the drawing for the book!

The paint in my house is from Farrell Calhoun. It's called Emma. It's more of a butter yellow, but I LOVE it.

  13. Oh, yea, I echo the above comment about the yellow paint. I picked one that I thought was bright and cheery - it ended up glaring and garish. It was awful. The tip I was handed was to pick your yellow, and then cut that shade AT least in half with white. Just warning you!!

  14. OH, by the way, I do consignment sales twice a year. It's a great way to get a little extra cash.

  21. Thanks for sharing your organization project with all of us. One of my most dreaded before/wonderful after things to do is clean out stuff.

That is exactly what I have been doing. We are packing up to move. I have been asking myself, "Do I L.O.V.E. this or not?" Then I decide to either pack it to keep, pack it to sell or give to goodwill. This will make the unpacking easier I know.

Thanks for the offer for the book, but I think someone else could benefit from it more than myself at this point in my journey.

I love the before/after photos too. I love seeing other people's houses too to get ideas for my next one (maybe someday).

Oh - and I LOVE the labeling you are doing.

I really enjoy your blog and you leave me cracking up all the time!

  23. I agree with Chrysanthemama... we've got airline miles saved up. Interested in a trip to NOLA? LOL.

PLEASE enter me in the contest. It is ridiculous trying to stay organized in 900 square feet. The only bonus to it is that you do buy/keep things you really don't need. :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. that is awesome! you would think that with only 2 people in my household, it would be easy to be organized. boy is it not. i did a before-and-after overhaul of one of our "throw it there!" closets a couple months ago and it was awesome. i'd love to read the book and get more helpful tips! thanks!

My next room to tackel is our front porch which has become the toy room. It's better than it was a few years ago, but still very unorganized and messy. I'm sure the book could help out wuth that project. :)

Great job! I am so glad you shared pictures, because it inspires me. :)

    Thanks, Sarah!

  39. Great job! I think kids' rooms are the hardest b/c of all the little pieces, video games and stuff in general. It really does help if a "home" has been established for their things.

I would love to have the book. Thanks for doing the giveaway!

If you do more organizing, show us what you've done :)

  40. You did a fantastic job--thanks for the pictures and motivation. This is the time of year I always get the itch to dig in and clean up, and reorganize the whole house. I've been making little stabs at it each day, in small increments and I'm slowly getting there. I've read lots of books on the subject--but one more can't hurt. Please add me to your drawing. If I win, I'll pass the book on to another after I read it. My only lament is YOU don't come with it! (hee hee)

  43. You are my organizational HERO!! I have a tiny little "yellow house" and closet space, well, lets just say that on person couldn't fit in our closets if they were empty. I would love a little help.

  83. Way to go, Sarah!! Everything looks fabulous! I'm especially impressed with the boys' room, because I've got the same thing here, it's insane. My biggest problem is I can't get the boys to let go of all their junk. I try to get rid of stuff while they are at school, but they NOTICE. Ugh. I have to just be the mom and get it done. DECLUTTER. Yuck.
    I loved your pictures :)

  84. Ooh! I hope I win! I really need to read this book...whether I win or not!

    ReplyDelete
  85. Sarah, you are making GREAT progress on organizing your house. You should be proud of yourself! :)

One trick I use with storage bins that go in the garage or some other place to actually be "stored" is that instead of labeling them with what's inside, I label them with a number. Then I keep a list of my own inside with exactly what is inside each numbered bin. This works really well if stuff in the bins is being stored long-term or might change in the future.

Oh, and I label EVERYTHING in my classroom. I guess I never thought to apply this to my home! However, I will say this... having some 70+ students rotating in and out of my room each day... Labels do not mean kids will automatically put them back in the labeled container. Bad habits are hard to break So, make sure you specifically teach your kids to put items back where they belong... and still allot time for re-sorting if they begin to just stuff in any container instead of the specific container the items belong in. :)

I know your boys will do great. I wish I had mom's at home teaching my students how to be organized before they came to school!!!

And I'd love a chance to win the book. I haven't seemed to be able to apply this concept to my own home! :)
