Do They?!?

Do girls sit and play with toys in the way that they were intended to be played with?

Do they?

Because in my experience, boys SO DO NOT!!!

It drives me a little bit crazy sometimes.

We have lots of toys...and rarely are they played with like I see those kids on TV commercials playing with them...with maybe the exception of Legos. Maybe.

This morning I walked into the boys' room to find Eli trying to repel off the top bunk...with his winter scarf while three others cheered him on. When I told them absolutely not, they looked at me in disbelief...like, WHY would I not think that was an excellent idea?!?

I carefully explained to them that I...am a fun-hater.

It gave me a flashback to my early elementary days, when I was sure boys were absolutely gross and disgusting and made no sense at all...weirdos.

Seriously, they are a little weird ;) I love 'em and all...but it doesn't change the fact that they kinda are a little disgusting sometimes :)

As the mother of three of those beautiful little creatures...I get to say that.

  2. I have those same children at my house! My female brain just cannot comprehend the why of the actions of boys!

God definitely made boys from a unique blend!

  3. My girls do play with things just the way they are supposed to, so imagine my surprise, when my boy came along! He will jump off of anything standing still and roll for 10 feet after he hits the ground. All of his jeans get worn through the knees, you can make a sandbox from the dirt in his shoes.....you get the picture:) But oh, how I love him!

  4. Actually, girls DO play with toys correctly. Most of the time...

I guess I'll be observing those differences first hand in a few short DAYS when baby Charlie arrives!

  5. I have 2 sweet nephews, ages 2 and 9 weeks. The 2 year old is really into trucks and cars right now, specifically the garbage truck. :) I love being the AUNT to these boys - there for all the fun, and missing the gross and disgusting stuff. :)

  6. for the most part yes...

but we are so done buying toys here...they'd rather did through my purse, the pantry or the kitchen cabinets any day!

  7. I absolutely agree! As a mom of 2 girls and 3 boys I discovered the same thing!

  8. Savannah pretty much plays with toys the way the were intended to be played with...and sometimes when I babysit for my friend's little boy, I am so shocked at the difference between them. Hilarious. If I ever have a boy, it is going to turn my whole way of thinking upside down.

  9. I have to give kudos to those of you raising boys. I don't know what I would do if one lived in my house and I had to raise him!

Every one of my nephews could run circles around me. I get dizzy just thinking about it :} I am simply exhausted after just an hour.

Even with all the drama and tears, THANK YOU LORD for giving me girls!!!

    Hugs!

  10. I'm glad you brought this up. My son NEVER plays with toys. He's got, wants them, but doesn't play with them. His friends come over and they wrestle. I fear one of them is going to need to leave my house via ambulance and that won't be good. The number one thing I say is "Your bed is NOT a jungle-gym!"

My daughter is the polar opposite. She loves toys and actually plays with them. I, in turn, love buying her toys. Girls are lovely creatures.

  11. i was wondering the same thing! my oldest NEVER (or hardly EVER) plays with toys the right way, either. maybe, it just means our boys are using their creative side... thinking outside the box!!!

  12. Are you surviving with the extras?

  13. My girl so does NOT play with toys as they were intended. At first it made me a little crazy to find her tea set cups in her dollhouse and doll being used for beasts of burden for her princesses. But I think I'm almost over that.

I have to go now, she is putting rocks in her e-z bake oven. (Hopefully that isn't a commentary on my cooking...)

  14. Even toys become something other than what they are with my two boys. They hardly ever play with them either, of course. But when they do, I'm always amazed at what they come up with.

I watch little girls with other mothers and wonder how they trained them to sit quietly and play with things the way they were meant to be played with. I'm a bit jealous.

But boys really are tons of fun. And weird.

  15. Ha! Great question! I only have boys & was detirmined not to ever buy them toy guns. What did leggos, playdo, sticks, popsicle sticks, etc get turned into? yep, guns!

  16. Oh my gosh...this was too funny...so glad you walked in on them before Eli's take off. Boys are crazy. I will say though that my daughter does not do crazy unsafe things, but she does not play with toys like intended either...too long to explain here though, but little girls are kinda odd too. :0

  17. Aw come on Mom, jumping off the top bunk isn't really that dangerous is it? What's the worst that could happen, a broken neck? :)

No, my girls do not play with their toys the way they were intended.

  18. I only have girls and they're teens now, but let me tell you they would be more like your boys. They would think the repeling idea was cool. And no, they seldom ever played with things in the normal way. About the only really girly thing they did was play with Barbies and also a little play kitchen they had. Otherwise, they more liked boy type toys.
So I can't speak for others with girls, but I think kids in general would rather use their imagination when it comes to toys than play with them the way they were intended to be played with.

  19. My girls definitely play with their toys the way they were made to be played with. But what else CAN you do with dolls?! Although this may explain why they never want their little brother playing with them!

  20. Ha ha!! So true. Their imaginations are amazing. Raising boys is an adventure!

  21. oh just you wait you haven't seen anything yet. . . . .it only gets worse as they get older. and the disgusting stuff they like to share, especially at the dinner table, but let me also tell you, it may be loud, chaotic, crazy and exhausting but theres no drama, and they do become each others best buds, I see it in all my boys. I love it and I am completely blessed by them every single day.

  22. As a mom of two girls and two boys, I can say yes and no. Sometimes they play with them like they were intended, and sometimes not. And 12 arrows is right-- as boys get older, they become even more foreign. I cannot tell you how many times I have reminded my 13 year old that belches are not meant to be heard at the dinner table...and we aren't supposed to talk about dissection there either. LOL> But they are so much fun-- both boys and girls. They are such a blessing, even if they are strange little creatures. :-)

  23. I adore my little man, but the thing that drives me crazy is...he takes the lids off of storage containers (for his legos, blocks, trains, animals etc) and uses them for...everything, except a lid! :) Well, that's ok, but he doesn't return them. Last Friday, a lid was a shield as he was playing knights with his friend...found it under the dining room table.

  24. um, that would be a BIG FAT NO!!! At least for these girls of mine. Drives me crazy! Little plastic plates become frisbees, toy wooden spoons are banged on everything making lovely music (yeah right) and I have caught my girls doing that same thing off the bunkbeds, which are now broken down, thank goodness! who knows what trouble miss Sarah would get into with those things!! Oh, and the cute little butterfly toddler table that I thought would be so sweet for having tea parties had to be removed from the house 'cause they liked to put the chairs on top of the table, climb on them, and jump off. So, no my girls do NOT play with toys the way they are meant to be played with. They would get a long just fine with your sweet boys!

  25. Try raising the sons of an engineer! Double Whammy!

  26. Yes I agree...Angelo has gross stuff growing out of his ears...I clean and clean on him but it comes right back! I've decided it's because he's a boy, girls wouldn't have stuff in their ears!!

  27. I HAD to comment on this one especially since my girls are grown-up (almost). Have you ever seen an ad for Barbies where the little girls are CUTTING their hair off at the scalp, or one where they insert a princess wand tip into an outlet, or use crayons to create a mural on the wall, or even one where they use their toy pots and pans to pour water over a TV ???? Those are a FEW of my experiences!! And might I also mention, the rubbermaid clothes baskets work well not only for laundry but as a sled to push Epley boys down the basement stairs!!!

  28. I have one girl and one boy. The differences are amazing! In general one of the stand out differences is he WANTS to be gross and TRYS to be gross. He does it with a little twinkle in his eye. Just like his father.

  29. My little boy tried to "swing from vines" like Indiana Jones by wrapping his belt around the pole on his swingset. Never the less, the belt broke and he was thrown to the ground in tears.
Boys are different little creatures... and I love mine a bunch. :)
