I AM That Dumb...

I had one of those moments last night, where I temporarily lost my mind.

Eli was in the upstairs hallway trying to figure out how to do a backwards somersault. I kept giving him instructions as I passed him while putting away laundry...tuck your head, you need some momentum...on and on, because apparently my lack of any gymnastics, ever, completely qualifies me for giving instructions to a six year old.

The last time I passed him something came over me and I said the fateful words..."let me show you."

Yeah.

I AM that dumb.

It didn't even cross my mind that 1 - I haven't done a backwards somersault since I was like...I don't know, twelve?!? and 2 - I am old.

Lets just say I heard a crunch when my neck, back and shoulders hit the lovely gold carpet...but I did make it over! And then I sat in the hall for about 20 minutes trying to figure out how to actually stand back up.

Dumb dumb dumb!

Oh, it gets better...especially when you get to call your husband and tell him what you did :)

I left a message with the chiropractor, begging them to squeeze me in today...and now I'm praying they have mercy on me.

If not...hopefully my Dr. will and at least give me pain medicine?

Anyone ever done this? (messing up your back I mean, I'm assuming NONE of you are dumb enough to try a backwards somersault...but if you are, that would be even better ;)

Happy Friday Friends!!

  2. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA...so sorry. But, you see, the reason I am laughing is b/c you are not the only one who will do crazy gymnastic stunts for your children's amusement.

    HAHAHHAHAHAHA

Not too long ago, I was trying to show Karsyn "my cartwheel" b/c she didn't believe that I could still do it.

    Well, she was right.

And man, did I hurt "down there" for weeks. OUCH!

So, totally not laughing AT YOU, my friend...just laughing right along side of you...and hurting for you!!!!!!!

Here's to all the pain we go through for our kids!

  3. Umm...ouch! Try the hot then cold compress...maybe a steaming hot shower to loosen it a bit. I hate that feeling. Last weekend I fell in dog pee, yes you heard me correct, dog pee at my moms house. I fell on the floor and my arm got jammed into the car seat I was carrying...I still feel all kershlongked.

  4. I am constantly doing dumb things to rehurt my back. The first time I hurt it, was when I was about 12. I was riding one of those inflatable rafts in the surf on the heals of a hurricane. I caught a really big wave and it proceded to break across my back and bend me backwards. I washed up on the shore and lay there unable to move until my father came and got me. How embarrasing.

    Enjoy a great weekend!

  6. Oh No!!! I think I will nickname you Lucy!!! I can picture Lucy showing Ethel how to do a backward somersault!

  7. I can't say that I've done a summersault or a cart-wheel but last summer I was kicking a giagantic blue ball around the backyard with my boys and one of them decided to be a rabbit and run out under my wheels (are you getting my driving analogy?). I of course didn't want to crush him so I did a very graceful jumping and tumbling move (I am sure you have seen the same move on Monday night football) and landed right on my shoulder. I couldn't sleep on it for a good two months and that was with regular trips to the chiropractor. Oooh, the things we do for our children. Hope you heal quickly.

  8. OH. MY. WORD. Too funny! Next time make sure you only do such things on a trampoline! I can do a front flip on a trampoline, but never a back flip, and never on the floor!

Sorry I have no words of advice on the pain. I will be praying the Dr. will come through!

  10. UM, OK so here is my confession, one time Lauren was all about kartwheels since i was queen of kartwheels BACK in the day i thought this should be cake? RIGHT?!?!?!?!?!?!?! um, no so i live on the street that goes straight into the highschool parking lot..ok so i decide to show my kartwheel "prowess" i stand up tall take a little run and before common sense could kick in i did it---kind of--- yeah i basically pulled every muscle on the inside of my legs and landed flat on my butt in the front yard---the the amusement of all the people going to the football game!! yay me!!

ok, then there was the time i was going to show the kids i could hang by the back of my knees on the monkey bar in the backyard (notice backyard this time...) so i get on leg up...and my shoe gets stuck on the bar and i cant lift myself up to get it off and i cant LET GO?!?! luckily my husband was in the garden and was able to rescue me before i had to injure myself further..... so you are not alone my friend, not alone....

  11. Yeah but if you're going to throw out your back, that's an awesome way to do it.

  12. OH MY GOSH!! Yes, my dad did the EXACT same thing when I was about 3 and we had some neighborhood kids playing at our house. He had been a gymnast in college -- but that had been a good 15-17 years previously. He decided to do a backwards somersault and landed...very poorly, lol! I think that was the last time in his life he ever tried that!

  13. I don't even have to try gymnastics moves. I once hurt my back loading the dishwasher.

Hope you are feeling better soon!

  14. This is incredibly hilarious to me. While I don't have kids, I was a kid once. I had these two friends of mine who were gymnasts. So I couldn't be outdone by them. We were jumping on the trampoline behind the couch trying to do flips over the couch. Well let's just say I didn't quite make it. I hurt my arm and busted three teeth out and bled all over the couch. Let's say my mom was embrassassed by this little incident!

I certainly hope you get in today and get some comfort from your pain!

  15. I am sorry about your back!
I could give you list of all the dumb things I have tried to do that I was very able equiped to do pre 30's but not so much anymore!
I think whoever wrote "age is only a state of mind" was living in a land of "blue sky". Not my world!:)

  16. Kudos for trying! The chiropractor worked wonders for my neck/ shoulder. It needed attention after slamming the tailgate of the van into it!!

  17. I am cracking up just reading some of the other bloggers posts about their incidents. I know I am not coordinated enough to attempt ANY gymnastic moves. I would probably end up in the hospital. I have fallen down stairs a couple times and hurt my back so I hear you on the back pain. Hope you get into the Dr. soon.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Oh, that's gotta hurt, girl! But a good story to tell. :) Hoping you feel better soon!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Seeing as how I couldn't do them when I was 12, I wouldn't try to attempt them now. :)

Hope your back gets feeling better. Sounds like a good excuse for a relaxing bubble bath tonight!

  20. I did not mean to laugh...it just came out...out loud...sorry. This is just SO like something I would do!

I really am sorry you're hurt!

  21. I can't even do a forward somersault anymore, never mind a backward one! I applaud your bravery!

At least you have an excuse for sitting around and getting pampered for a few days!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. oops.

I would totally do a backwards somersault while forgetting that I would totally hurt myself. So thank you for reminding me to NOT give it a try.

  23. Okay... I have this sudden urge after reading this post and all the comments to go try it, just to see if I can. But, I'm guessing that would be a stupid idea, yes? But the urge is strong... My brain says, "You're 35, and while in better shape than ever since high school, you're still 35. DON'T!" But I don't have a long history of listening to common sense... ;-)
You might just need to pray for me. LOL! I'll pray for you. :-D

  24. I have never done that. I did however, experience a good deal of cracking recently when I almost won a limbo contest.

I'm sure that's totally useless to you, but it does provide me with the opportunity to gloat.

PS - you just sealed your fate as "the cool Mom" because you actually DID the somersault. That's gotta mean something, right? :)

  25. EWWW! OUCH! I hurt my back a couple of years ago. But I wasn't doing anything exciting like gymnastics! I simply bent over the wrong way to pick up one of my kids and then couldn't stand up straight or move without pain for a couple of weeks. Yeah- that was fun. Hubby had to take a couple of days off work and I think my mom came from Michigan for a few days. Hope you heal quickly!

  26. You always make me LAUGH OUT LOUD, which is a HUGE accomplishment :)
    Hope you're better soon!

  27. Oh Sarah! Ouch! I hope you have gottensom relief by now. I'm always trying silly things with the boys. Ususally what gets me is carrying K around though. :)

  28. Girl, Girl, Girl......I do hope you get some meds for that. I tried to kick higher than my daughter (who was a college cheerleader at the time) and I couldn't walk for like 2 weeks! Hope you weekend is pain free.
Oh, I tried to e-mail you back yesterday but it would not go through...I'll try again :)

  29. Trying cartwheels after your thirty and a bunch of lbs overweight doesnt work too well either. Nearly tore up shoulder muscles...not fun. I guess we just forget we aren't 12 anymore.... :)

  30. I remember pulling my back a few years ago when we were finishing our basement. I was doing the painting and was doing a faux finish on the walls. I was in the middle of wall #1 when I bent over, heard and felt a pop and then was in severe pain. Of course, when you are doing a faux finish, you can't stop until you are done.

By the time I finished I had to crawl up the stairs (I now know we have 13 stairs).

    Drugs are good!

Praying you could get in to see someone!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Nope. Never done this. Guess I'm just more flexible than you.

Now, I have almost given myself a concussion. Does that count as dumb too?

Anyway, hope you're neck and back get popped back into place.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh, I sure hope the chiro can squeeze you in...back/neck pain is awful. I have to go see mine every couple of weeks or I would be a mess.

Thanks for being my late Friday night entertainment...I couldn't help but laugh. And sympathize, of course. ;)

  33. Old cheerleading move... toe touches... jump up... toes out in front...in a v, brought up to fingers...didn't walk normal for 2 weeks. I was too proud to call the chiro. I felt like I deserved the pain for being so dumb.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Gosh I hope they got you in and you were able to sleep last night. It's all fun and games when it is during waking hours...

    ReplyDelete
  35. Done that. My daughter was try her back limbers. Let me show you... I use the do this stuff all the time. Can't do any of it any more...major headaches! I guess were getting old!
